Introduction
The past few years, the demand for high DHA oils combined with a minimal smell and odor footprint has been growing.
Such products would expand the field of oil application and present new opportunities to product development teams. The availability of such products would enable more creative and niche-oriented companies to develop products for new markets.

Progress Biotech has successfully combined a pure and stable algal oil product with the best available refining and processing techniques, resulting in a flavorless and odorless plant-based high DHA algal oil.

To get this high quality plant-based oil, a type of micro alga has been carefully selected from nature. 
​The alga species is called Schizochytrium sp. We use a proprietary strain that we found in a mangrove forest, its natural habitat.

​Algal oil that is free of odor and flavor opens up a whole new range of applications that were previously off limits for traditional Omega-3 products.
​This oil can be incorporated in 
a variety of delivery systems such as gummies, chewables and direct-intake emulsions.

Winterization of Algal oil

About winterization
During production of our high DHA algal oil from biomass of the strain Schizochytrium the extract of the biomass is dewaxed, degummed and winterized to result in a crude algal oil product that is later refined to the final product.

The winterization process removes a part of the saturated fatty acids from the oil. For Progress Biotech this is the standard oil. When producing special winterized oil an extra winterization step is introduced. Sometimes referred to as a second or double winterization. The objective is to remove components that crystallize at lower temperatures. Although this process is reversible, precipitations are not desired in high end applications. The second winterization results in a completely clear oil with a very low crystallization point. Progress Biotech designates this type of product as winterized oil. 

It is advised to test oils for the specific application and determine the suitability of both types for the intended application. The winterization process brings extra costs to the process and results in a more exclusive oil.

The standard oils (type-S) are perfect for incorporation in powders and food applications.
As well in softgels as in capsules that are not transparent.
The double winterized oils (type-W) are the premium product designed for clear capsules that will remain transparent even when stored in the refrigerator (4ºC.)

​Natural TG ​
Natural TG for Progress Biotech means a chemically unchanged form of TG. This is the natural form of DHA in algae as found in nature. With no compromises made on quality and purity. All 40% and 50% oils by Progress Biotech are natural TG. 

Triglycerides (TG)
Triglycerides are composed of 3 fatty acids bound to a glycerol backbone molecule. TG is the most common form of fatty acids in nature. 

​Ethyl esters (EE)
​
To increase the content of DHA it is possible to concentrate the oil. But first ethylation is needed. This process removes the glycerol backbone of the TG and then the free fatty acid forms of DHA are esterified with ethanol to form ethyl esters. This process is known as trans-esterification. 

​Re-esterified Triglycerides (rTG)
​
The TG DHA fatty acids are first converted to EE and concentrated to increase the content of DHA. Then the EE molecules are broken down and re-esterified to a glycerol backbone. This allows concentrated forms of rTG oil. rTG is a reconstituted form of the natural occurring TG.

Origin
For the production of this high quality algal oil a special type of micro alga has been carefully selected from nature. The strain was discovered in a mangrove forest, its natural habitat. This type of alga, named Schizochytrium Sp, is the main species that is approved for the production of DHA for human consumption. All natural origin and fish free.
